High School Esports League (HSEL) is partnering with Hybrid World Adelaide (HWA) to deliver a National High School Esports Rocket League Championship in 2018, with the finals to be hosted by international esports identity Muselk live at HWA from July 21 – 22 at the Adelaide Convention Centre and streamed live around the world.
Schools from all around Australia will be invited to play in an online Rocket League qualifying tournament to determine the four best school teams, which will then be flown to Adelaide to compete in a LAN event finals series on Sunday, July 22.
HSEL Commissioner Woody Wu said Rocket League was a natural next step for HSEL.
“We were looking at other games and which ones would make sense for the high school esports space and now have this great opportunity with Hybrid World Adelaide to put on a Rocket League tournament,” Wu said.
“Rocket League, basically soccer but with cars, is a popular game suitable for high school students and is a competitive game that provides opportunities to build character and teamwork.
“In the same way it doesn’t make sense to only offer one sport at school, we need to offer more than one game for high school esports.
“We hope that the HSEL Rocket League Championship engages a broader student audience and results in students and teachers getting involved in the school ecosystem.”
Esports influencer Muselk, who has nearly 5.5 million YouTube subscribers and over 350,000 Twitter followers, will launch the event and be the host on the day.
Muselk will be available for photo and signing opportunities, while there will also be come and try areas for interested fans.
“I’m really excited to head down to Adelaide and get involved with the High School Esports League,” Muselk said.
“It’s an awesome opportunity to meet all the up-and-coming pro-gamers in Australia and get even more people involved in this awesome community.”
Hybrid World Director Amanda Duthie said that HWA was excited to continue to expand the reach and calibre of esports competitions in Australia.
“Hybrid World Adelaide is the perfect setting to showcase Australia’s growing esports community, offering people young and old the opportunity to get up close and personal with Australia’s young and rapidly growing esports league,” said Ms Duthie
“Visitors will not only be able to watch Rocket League being played but there will be a chance to try playing Rocket League against their friends and with Muselk on board, you can expect an experience not to be missed.”
Students won’t just be playing in the event, they will be delivering it as well.
Northern Adelaide Senior College students will be participating in a League of Legends demonstration on the Saturday and a number of students received an opportunity to undertake work experience during the HSEL event with the production team.
Hybrid World Adelaide is a digital entertainment and technology event launched in 2017 that explores the future of a ‘hybrid world’, where the real and digital world collide and ultimately evolve. It will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre from Friday, July 20 to Tuesday, July 24.
The HSEL Rocket League will be a part of the HWA Interactive Program which includes a range of immersive events and activities for everybody from the tech curious to the digital enthusiast. People of all ages can get hands-on with tech inspired activities from drone racing, to a robot combat tournament, augmented reality, virtual reality experiences and so much more. The HWA Interactive Program is free to enter with limited ticketed workshops available.
